Television and Radio

Every morning when I open my browser I have it set to open to Facebook of course and also Hulu. Today I saw that they had added Degrassi High to the list of available shows you can watch, when you want. Recently our family gave up cable TV. This is a first for us. When we figured out that we could hook the computer to the television and watch programs and movies on demand we decided that "cable" was a bill we were willing to give up. When did we become so oriented around the world of television? Did you have a console televisions when you were a kid? We had a console but it was mostly used as a stand for the smaller TV. Consoles were heavy and not really worth the cost of repairing the picture tubes that would go out. It was also before remote controls and most of us only had three channels unless you flipped the antennae from VHF to UHF to pick up PBS. Wow, great fun. Sometimes we even had to go outside and twist the antenna to get better reception. Often we didn't know if the snow was part of the show or not and you had to be home to watch a show. We didn't get a VCR until I was in high school. If you wanted to watch a music video you had to stay up until after midnight to watch Friday Night Videos. IMDB says it was NBC's response to MTV, which you could only get if you had cable which we didn't because the cable company thought it was way to expensive to run "line" all the way out to where we lived. If you wanted to hear a particular song you had to either have a record album or wait for the song to come on the radio. If it was currently on the charts I would spend all day Sunday after church holed up in my bedroom with my boom box listening to the Top forty with either Casey Kasem or Rick Dees. I used to have lots of cassette tapes with little pieces of clear tape over the hole on the top so that I could record over them.:) Now if you want to hear particular song just plug in the info in any search and up pops youtube.com.
It makes you wonder if we are remembering such good times what are our kids going to consider blasts from the past. “Hey do you remember when we actually had to use our fingers to type words that appeared on a screen and if you wanted to hear a song you had to type the name instead of just saying it?” And I thought we were living the Jetson’s life now.
